1959 Roller Mobil und Kleinwage Magazine Volume Ten

The mid-1950s in Europe was the golden age for motor scooters and microcars and specialist magazines like Roller Mobil Kleinwagen kept the marketplace informed about the latest developments. The October 1959 issue features a review of the new DKW Junior, a car originally conceived as Auto-Union's answer to the microcar craze. Although the car started development in the early 1950s, the project went through development hell before emerging at the 1957 Frankfurt Motor Show as the DKW 600. However, the DKW 600 on display was a fake, without even a functioning engine. After wowing the critics, Auto-Union rushed the car back through the design phase, putting it on the market as the DKW Junior in 1959. Now with a much improved 750cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine, the car went on to become a market winner in the small car class.

Competing with DKW in the same class is the Goggomobil Isar 700. In scooter news, this edition reports on the unlikely Harley Davidson Topper from the US.
